Exhibition: Microbeauty
Artist: Julia Fernandez-Pol
Date: Friday, September 5, 2014
Time: 6p – 9p
Location: 1221C N. Orange Ave. Orlando, FL 32804

Join us tomorrow night for the opening of “Microbeauty,” a solo exhibition featuring Julia Fernandez-Pol. This show, curated by Alya Poplawsky and Katy Bakker, is the pair’s second collaboration with Twelve21 Gallery and one of seven shows planned together between now and May 2015.

Julia’s lush, abstract oil paintings are built with layers of heavy impasto, a strong color palette and nature-based themes. Her work is based on microscopic observations of nature and a documentation of shapes, colors and textures. “My interests lie in the visceral moments or experiences in nature that are infused with a peculiarity and grotesqueness that demonstrate nature’s decadent tendency towards extreme beauty,” she explains.

“Microbeauty,” explores the transformation of her work from specific drawings to larger paintings that reflect the abstraction of elements observed in the natural world. Juxtapositions are created in color, emotion and texture, and the viewer’s senses are stimulated by darkness and light, order and chaos, beauty and grotesque. From the macro view to the minuscule details, Fernandez-Pol’s exhibition reflects the volatility of nature full of changing patterns, lusciousness and vibrancy resembling the dynamic growth seen in living ecosystems.

Born in 1984 in St. Louis, MO, Julia Fernendez-Pol received her MFA from Boston University and her BFA from Washington University in St. Louis. Her paintings can be found in the permanent collections of the Daum Museum and the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center. She has attended several prestigious residencies including Yaddo, Oehme Graphics, Riverhouse Editions, and the Vermont studio Center. With 11 solo shows and over 20 group shows around the world, Fernandez-Pol has been featured in numerous publications including the Boston Globe which dubbed her a “rising star.”

*The artist will not be in attendance, though we are happily excusing her absence since she’s busy hanging with panda bears and completing her residency in China.
